John Grochalski

heat advisory

the basketball courts are empty

and the dogs look dead on their leashes

even the chinese women

won’t dance in a line

in the trees the birds are still as stones

only the crazies come alive in this

screaming and slobbering on the melting streets

we walk around like sweating fools

refusing to admit what we’ve done

us

the government

the corporations

especially the corporations

no, we fry like eggs in a skillet

on the boiling asphalt

praying for an early fall

while CEOs and celebrities

suck freon in private jets

flying from one private villa to another

where the drinks sit waiting

cool and iced

and the pool’s the perfect temperature

all of the time.
