Ursula Shepherd

Bobcat at first light

I woke far out this morning

out on the pinyon-studded desert

my moss green bag reeking

with the musky   acrid    scent of cat

and she (this haughty queen)

            standing

only a breath away

      amber eyes ablaze

              dusky ruff and

                    black tipped ears

                           stiff with purpose

locked righteous eyes on me

warned me

      willed me

from her winter lair.

Ursula Shepherd lives in Ashland, Oregon with her husband and Australian Cattle Dog after moving from the southwest a few years ago. She continues to miss that landscape, and those people.  She used to be an ecologist and writes to stay sane in this chaotic world. Her poetry has appeared in, among others, Black Coffee Review, Big Wing Review, Passionfruit, Sheila-Na-Gig, Unbroken, Ekphrastic Review, and Boats against the Current.
