How to Drink Yourself Sober

Chapter Three: More About Alcoholism- John the Revelator

God walk down in the cool of the day called Adam by his

name and Eve turned her back naked pale white against

my chest. It was summer. So hot the big lake turned dark

and the sky was blood warm. Eve cut her hair with a razor

trying to be all Patti Smith cool unaffected. Called me her

book of revelations. Climbed on top of me, kissed the smile

right off my face. This was before the animals were named

before Adam refused to answer because he was ashamed.

Eve knows the serpent’s on his way, reads the future in the

pauses between our breaths. Eden’s not the kind of place we

are comfortable living. We are rich, newly minted and ready

for this world to burn.
